So I picked up a 750GB WD My Passport at BB a couple days ago, oblivious to the added Drive Lock/Smart BU crap on the label - I was going to format it anyway. After formatting for Mac OS Extended, I mount the drive and an added virtual CD pops up, too. This is the app that allows the user to encrypt/decrypt the drive, and it's apparently part of the firmware. A bit of research shows that lots of folks have had issues with/misunderstood how to use the Drive Lock app, getting locked out of their drives. According to WD, the only solution is to reformat the drive.
Right now, the drive is unlocked and, because I nuked any original content, there doesn't appear to be any way to encrypt it. Can I trust this drive? Anyone have one of these and successfully delete/update the firmware (kind of hoping for an OS X-centric solution)? Should I just return it?
